About Burundi

Burundi is a small, landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa. The Twa, Tutsi and the Hutu are the main people groups living in Burundi. Political unrest resulting from social differences between the Tutsi and the Hutu led to civil war in Burundi throughout the middle of the 20th century.  Burundi is one of the world’s poorest countries, with very low GDP per capita and ranking only 178th out of 187 countries on the UNDP Human Development Index.  Burundi has an extremely high maternal mortality rate of 800 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Family Impact in Burundi

Family Impact Burundi became a Family Impact member in 2008. The main emphasis is on teaching and counselling on marriage in churches and communities and on a weekly programme on national radio. There is also a vibrant outreach to young people in Life skills teaching and a cyber cafe that operates as a drop in centre for young people.
