About Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is located in Southern Africa and has a population of over 12 million people.  With an unemployment rate of over 80%, an estimated 68% of the population living below the poverty line, Zimbabwe ranks only 172nd out of 187 countries on the UNDP Human Development Index.  In addition, Zimbabwe experiences a very high HIV prevalence at 14.3% and a maternal mortality rate of 570 deaths per 100 000 live births.

Family Impact In Zimbabwe

Family Impact was established in Zimbabwe in 2001, and is based in Bulawayo. Family Impact Zimbabwe is divided into four departments which run various programs designed to respond to HIV & AIDS and strengthening families.

Programs include:

  • Family strengthening (MC101, Foundations for Family, Children of Promise)
  • Womens community health (including Sanitary Pad making)
  • Participatory health and hygiene in schools
  • Lifeskills camps and seminars

Workplace HIV and AIDS prevention and Peer Education programs are run in companies. Pre-trial diversion support work with juveniles has been conducted in collaboration with local government in various aspects since 2011. Community work includes supporting vulnerable schools with building projects, and other interventions.  Networking with local government and churches is a core component of the work.
